|I'm doing the Tupper Lake Tinman next weekend. My first triathlon, so I'm a little concerned that I not underdo, but also not overdo breakfast and I am concerned about the timing. The first swim wave is at 8 AM, and subsequently every five minutes. I've read that the meal should be at least three hours before the start, but also to consume some calories(i.e. energy bar, sport's drink, gu etc..) right before you go off. What do others typically make as the breakfast meal? Also what time do you eat it? Should I get up in the middle of the night(3AM) and eat something? |

|I usually eat a light breakfast (whole wheat toast with jelly, or a whole wheat bagel with light butter, and a banana) about 2 hours before I start. I always sip on a bottle of water 8-16 ounces right up to the start. I take a GU, or Car-Boom packet about 15 minutes before my start. I also have a gel packet during the transitions. I have done this routine with my mountain biking races and it has worked well for me. I tried on my first tri last month and it seemed to work fine.
Like I said, this works for me, you will have to try different things and see what works for you. Try to work it into your training and see how different foods and times work for you.

|I usually eat bagel with almond butter and honey, banana, and 2 glasses of water when I get up, probably about 2-2:30 hours before race time depending on travel time.
I'll then eat a clif bar or powerbar about an hour before the race, and drink some GU sports drink for the next 1/2 hour as well (i'm always concerned about cramping due to hydration). I make sure to stop drinking enough before the race to pee excess out before the swim.
Other than that, I'll down a GU just before the start, and then have a GU every 30-40 minutes.

|a few hours before(2-3) I'm on the line, I eat a big bowl of oatmeal, very complex carbs so you dont bonk when the carbs after your night before pasta run out. I usually drink two bottles of water starting at two hours and until about 15 minutes up until the start.
Good luck with the tupper lake tri as your first. I hear the run course is ridiculously hard. tell us how it went!
