Tour of SE Michigan stage race: $75 plus $5 lisence. 1 prologue, 1 hellish road race, 1 circuit race where half the riders are fried. $6500 prize list.
Great Lakes Tri/Duathlon Championship: $62 plus $9 lisence. $1500 prize list!

the Tour of SE MI has THREE stages over 2 days and costs $75. pretty darn expensive. but the Great Lakes Tri/Du championship costs 13 dollars less for ONE race! and the prize list is a bit over a third of the former! what's up with that?

lifeguards, coast-guard, magic markers, caps, more clocks, more timing officials, neato tshirts, and all with fewer sponsers.

So I guess you haven't checked out IM entry fees yet, have you?

Also, $62 for a tri isn't all that bad. Premier events will run you much more.

yeah, I don't want to know how much an ironman or half IM is going to cost.
I have seen some duathlons about $45-55, so I'm going for one of those.

I am kind of bummed about the high cost myself, but I am also thankful that there are local promoters that are doing this so I can get my jollys. I definately don't mind the guy making a buck. I have done some duathalons, but my first tri is next weekend (I hope). I plan to thank the promoter for taking his time to set up something like this. Although I have to say I would probally do more races if they were cheaper.
