|First half IM...?||irongirl|

|I raced a short season this year, my first racing year. Did 3 sprint tris and an Olympic distance. I'm looking toward next year and would like to try my first half Ironman, in between several strong Oly distances. Several folks I've spoken with advise against it, as it's going to be my first full year, but others say to go for it. I will have the endurance by then and I definitely have the desire, but I don't want to do anything stupid. Advice?|

|If your goal is to finish the distance, somewhat regardless of the time, then yes indeed, you can do that next year. Tri-Newbies Online has a good training program to develop the endurance to make the distance. |
If your goal is to do the race fast, then I'd say wait a couple years. You develop a lot of endurance for half-IM events by doing a lot of Oly distances fast. By the time you develop the speed to do a real fast Oly, you've developed a good endurance base to launch a half-IM build-up.

|trinewbies.com has some great training programs, lots of people on the forum are very knowlegable as well.
I also agree with that brider said about the speed of your races. Unless the 1/2 is at the end of your season and you've gotten a fairly good time for the oly distance, I wouldn't recommend going all out for the 1/2.
I'm sort of in the exact same situation as you (raced a short season last year, this will be my first full summer of racing comming up AND I'm doing my first 1/2 IM). I'm going to take the 1/2 pretty easy... partially because I like to do that when I'm racing a new distance for the first time (nothing can turn you off from a sport like a bad first experience) and also because I have other races which are extremely close to my 1/2 IM (described in my post below).
Best of luck, with whatever you choose to do! Which 1/2 are you planning on racing?

|My goal is just to finish and have fun at this distance this year while getting better at the Oly distance. I want to do this particular 1/2 because it's in a really pretty area near where I live and I will also have friends training for it (varied abilities), and of course to see how I can do. My goal for next year is primarily to get better at the Oly distance. The 1/2 I'm thinking about doing is Pacific Crest in Bend, Oregon.|

|Oregon is an absolutely beautiful place... only been there once, but we have plenty of that west coast beauty up here too (I'm from Victoria, British Columbia).
Good luck with your races.
