|Well, I did it. Although it was just 800 yards, it went well. I relaxed, focused on the fact that I had been practicing with the local YMCA masters team, etc. Most importantly I got in the water early (20 min. before race) and warmed up. This I would say is imperative to first timers.) I swam out 25 yards and then on the way back in it just clicked. It was just like swimming in the pool. Roll to the side and breathe. Roll and breathe. In one instant it became natural. I just focused on doing five strokes at the onset and it just started to flow. That's it. So simple. What was a lot of anxiety became a huge relief. Anyway, I did breathe in water, got bumped into, slapped a fellow swimmer mid-stroke to the head (she said 'no biggie'), swam a crooked-ass line, etc. But, it was just fine. It's for fun, right?
I finished 6th out of 45 in my age group. Not too shabby for 2nd try at it.
Advice: Relax. Warm-up, Focus on doing a couple strokes to start.
Good luck to everyone.
