How to mount computer when using aerobars....ideas please!curtybirdychopper

hi

my syntace aerobars attach to the handlebars right where my stem attaches to the handlebars. i consequently have no room on the handlebars to mount a computer unless i were to mount it way off to the side near the hoods or something.

i had two ideas, one is to mount my computer on my stem, if i could do it so the head wasnt facing sideways. anyone done this?

the other is to make a small knob or tube that comes out sideways in between the aerobars to mount the computer head. i know syntace makes a small mount like this, but i'd sorta like to make or do something w/o buying this mount (though its only like $10).

any ideas or experience. thanks. curt

I've mounted the computer sideways on the aero bars. Works pretty well, and you get used to reading it sideways. Mounting it on the stem can work, but it also places it "lower" relative to your head and makes it difficult to see when riding. If you're running a wireless computer, you can mount it at the end of the aero bars. I've also used a section of tube between the aerobar extensions -- just use some bar tape to "secure" it to the aero bars.

... this is a pic of an "L" shaped extension that holds both the 'puter and HRM.

It was fabricated from an old tribar mount and a section off an old MTB bar... and has become a near standard feature on most of my road bikes and all of my TT bikes.

The extension can be rotated a bit around the handlebar for optimal position... and it clears the HRM and 'puter from the faceplate of my Forgie stems (a problem for some of the first generation Flight Deck mounts).

We abide.

Well, I broke down and bought the premade mounts, but with a dremel and some patience, there's no reason you couldn't take sections of handlebar, miter and polish one end, and cut slots to fit a hose clamp. It wouldn't be too pretty, but would be under the computer/HRM anyway, so not that important.
I'd put 2-3 layers of electrical tape on the aerobar under the mount, to prevent scratching the finish.
The other option, at least for Sigma computers, is to buy a stem mount, which would keep the display in its proper orientation, but with aero bars, would probably place it too far back to easily read. On my Profile Split Seconds, I've got my computer and HRM mounted about 3 inches ahead of the bullhorns, and I still have to look down slightly to read them.

Here's what I did:

Get a short section of pcv pipe and using a tool like a dremel round one end to form a "c" so it fits against the
inside of one of the bars. Now measure the pipe to fit
in between the bars and cut it. Now grind a "c" or reverse "c" in it to fit the inside of the second bar.

Paint with flat black paint and wedge it inbetween the bars.
It took about ten minutes to do!
