Need advice on wheels(4 posts)

Need advice on wheelsBaker Boy

I am looking to upgrade my wheels and could do with some advice.

At the moment I am riding on Mavic CXP11 rims and some cheap hubs for both training and racing.

I am 6'1" and weigh app. 200lbs. My budget allows consideration for Mavic Cosmos, Bontrager Select, and Gipiemme Tecno 24. At a push I might even consider Bontrager Race Lite or Mavic Ksyrium Elite.

At my weight should I rule out some of the lesser spoked wheels? And would it be worthwhile considering getting a wheel made instead of purchasing a complete wheelset? Perhaps something with a Mavic CXP33 rim and Shimano hubs?

I'd like something strong and quick and will use my old Mavic CXP11's for training rides.

Any help much appreciated.

Since we're talking race-day-only wheels here, I'd suggest taking a look at the Rehn disk for the rear, and maybe a Hed Alps front. Or if you can swing it, Hed3 for the front. Hed has a "clearance" area on their site, well worth checking out. And the Rehn is the budget wonder of the year.

Here are a couple other companies that make wheels for triathlon and time trialing. I have Spinergy SRX and they work weel for me as a training and race wheel. Friends of mine ride Zipp, Corima, and Campy

Although I never tried it, those wheels on eBay and Marketplace are cheap. You might want to try it. Tell me how it goes.
