You'll get quite a few opinions, depending on who you ask. The answer really depends on the race distance and your own personal preferences. You may want to check out DeSoto Sports (http://www.desotosport.com). They specialize in triathlon clothing. For reference, I run sprint triathlons, and I'm using their power tri shorts - they're like bike shorts but with less padding. In T1, I pull on a lightweight t-shirt or singlet and wear that until the end. I know others who wear a speedo the entire race, but I'm just not comfortable biking in one, myself.

Whatever you do, try it out in training before you race. That way, you'll know what's comfortable for you.

Depends on among other things: 1)distance, 2)weather:water/air temp, 3) what you are comfortable in. For me, for sprints in a lake I will just wear the tri shorts from Zoots http://www.zoothawaii.com/ For Olympic or ocean swim I will wear a wet suit with a speedo underneath and throw on biking shorts or zoots shorts when I get out of the pool. Also depends on how important comfort vs. time is for you. If you just want to finish you should make sure you are totally comfortable.

I do sprint tris, my first one (last summer) i ran in just a bathing suit with a t-shirt pulled on in T1, this year i spent the money and bought a pair of RNH tri shorts, like bike shorts but shorter and with less padding, but they are excellent for biking and running, really confortable. thats the store/what i use
