Heras wins the Vuelta!!!mohair_chair

Well, not quite, and not yet, but it's still possible.

Here's an interesting topic to discuss. Imagine that Nozal cracks big time on the penultimate stage for some reason and looks like he is going to lose multiple minutes to Heras. As ONCE director, what do you do with GdG? Do you protect your podium shot by attaching him to Heras? Or do you keep him back and use him to escort Nozal home, whatever the cost?

If Nozal has CLEARLY cracked, IGdG must defend his position. Once has many strong riders to stick with Nozal.

Isn't the second-to-last stage an ITT?eyebob

If so, your scenario couldn't happen. 1) GdG isn't permitted to help and 2) he wouldn't know to because izidro goes off last.

I was convinced the final stage was the mountain time trial. Please substitute whatever the word is for "third to last" for "penultimate."
But the scenario does apply to the penultimate mtn stage. nmAsiago

I hope they have good legs tommorow, because if they want to crack nozal, they have to set high and sparatic tempo on both those cat 1 climbs. In the end i can see maybe beltran and heras climbing hard on the last climb and work there way down the descent. I also think that Kelme with valverde and sevilla are almost definitely going to attack on the last climb for sevilla a win, and valverde the points competition. So if Heras has the speed he might end up with them.

I would assume that ibanesto.com, kelme, usps all have reasons to set a high tempo with the hopes of cracking Once and Rasmussen as well. USPS should look to see Beltran, Checu, and Landis pushing as hard as possible to get up over that last Cat. 2 climb (or is it a Cat. 1 Climb?) with the hopes that Heras has some friendly foes to work with on the descent and run in. Too bad Hincapie dropped out, He's the type of guy that might have been able to hump it over the climb to help set high tempo on the descent.

but Serrano has been there for ONCE lately. So I'd leave Serrano to help Nozal, and if GdG can stick with Heras let him follow him. Afterall, if Nozal is seriously cracking GdG becomes ONCE best chance to take out the overall by beating Heras in the TT.

After the last climb, it's a long descent to the finish. I don't think that there will be enough road and time to make it work.
