Team cars during ITT, how many?(4 posts)

Team cars during ITT, how many?Nate552

My roomate is a newbie to watching the Tour on TV and he has finally stumped me with a question. During the ITT each rider has a team car behind him with his name on a plate on the hood. So how many cars does each team have? I can't imagine they have 9 each. If they only have a few then when the rider they were following is finished do they drive back to the start for the next rider on the team? What if say 3 riders from the same team go off within 10 minutes of each other? Does the Tour have a fleet of cars and they just take turns slapping team stickers on them? If they do, how they coordinate radios, computers and such. Anyone have any insight to this? Thanks.

The cars are supplied by the Tour, which, in turn, gets them from the manufacturer, so they have as many cars as it takes. I don't think they recycle cars (i.e. the last place rider's car is re-used for a later starter) but it is entirely possible.

Each team only has three cars for the race, so choose wisely! Depending on the course and start list, often there is time to recycle the cars. The Gendarmes (French national police) can be very helpful here.

I read an article last year that said that they accept a limited number of "volunteers" to drive chase behind riders when a team car isn't available. You could sign up to do this and drive your own car in the race. Naturally, you aren't going to drive behind any of the top contenders, but you might get to chase Joe Schmoe in 125th place. I don't remember all the details, and I can't find the article, but I assume they check you out first.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing yesterday when watching the TT recap. During regular stages you would only need a couple of cars for each team. I can't believe the organizers would bust out another 7 or 8 cars per team just for the ITT. My guess was that the lower skilled riders just do without and the big dogs get the escort.
