What are the TdF timing rules?hammer_cycle

I'm curious as to what the rules are for timing? Is it based on each type of stage (flat, TT, mountain) or is there a set time? From what I've heard, its not a fixed time (ie 30 minutes), but rather % of the winners time. Is that right? If so, what are the time limits?

You're correct - its % of the stage winner's time. I recall it being an odd-time, like 16% or something like that
Depends on what type of stage as well (nm).Dwayne Barry

Your best bet is to go to the official Tour de France website and download the official rules PDF document. It's in French and English.

The timing rules are extensive. Each race is assigned a coefficient that defines the finish deadlines. Stage 15 was assigned coefficient 4 which means:

Coefficient 4
(very difficult and short stages):
The finishing deadline is equal to the winner's real time plus:

  • 9% thereof if the average speed per kilometer is no more than 28 km/h
  • 10% thereof if it is between 28 km/h and 29 km/h
  • 11% thereof if it is between 29 km/h and 30 km/h
  • 12% thereof if it is between 30 km/h and 31 km/h
  • 13% thereof if it is between 31 km/h and 32 km/h
  • 14% thereof if it is between 32 km/h and 33 km/h
  • 15% thereof if it is between 33 km/h and 34 km/h
  • 16% thereof if it is between 34 km/h and 35 km/h
  • 17% thereof if it is between 35 km/h and 36 km/h
  • 18% thereof if it is between 36 km/h and 37 km/h
  • 19% thereof if it is between 37 km/h and 38 km/h
  • 20% thereof if it is between 38 km/h and 39 km/h
  • 21% thereof if it is above 40 km/h

The winning time was 4:29:26 for 159.5K, making the average speed 35.52 km/h, making the cutoff time 17%. Taking 17% of 4:29:26, you get 0:45:49. Adding the two together, you get the cutoff time of 5:15:15. Note the commissaires decision from stage 15:

Axel Merckx (Lotto Domo): Finished in a time of 5:23:30 and was eliminated
