|I don't normally care alot about commentators. When they're good like Liggett and Sherwen they add to the event but I can tune out bad ones.
Kirsten Gum is the exception. I mean she must have heard Phil, Paul, Bob, Frankie and God knows how many others properly pronounce "Joseba Beloki" and she still can't?
Posey is ok. I remember when he first started long ago he knew nothing of the sport but he has become a true fan. I thought the guy last (name?) year was in the same process. He knew little but was genuinely impressed with the event once he saw it was impressed and was tryig to learn. Gum is nothing but eye-candy.
Surely there are female commentators available who can do a better job? There must be.

|His voice reminds me of Norm McDonald (comedian). It grates on me, but at least he knows what he's talking about and can get access to some good interviews.|

|I'm sure you saw him last year. This year, he's interviewing a lot of USPS riders, but he's also getting some stage winner interviews, something he NEVER did last year. He's also loosening up. He's not as stiff as last year. He He still asks the creampuff questions, but he's an ex-cyclists first, and a journalists second.
Actually, this year, Paul Sherwin is the one who is starting to bother me. Maybe I've just heard him too much but he's a broken record. I think I'd prefer hearing Roll doing play by play. He's just more tactically astute.
During the Giro, when there was a break, Roll knew each rider's motivation and possible strategy. Liggett and Sherwin can provide some good guesses, but not much more.

|You're judging her by wrong standards. She's what some of us in media call 'the pivot.' As in, 'playing the pivot.' She's the transition point around which everything moves.
Her job is to take the ball from one shooter and lob it to another. Keep the offense moving.
She's not supposed to be an expert. She's supposed to keep the show moving along so the experts can take their shots.
It's really a technical-TV job, not a cycling-expert job. She actually does it pretty credibly. She looks and sounds good and she's quick on her feet. I'd hire her in a second.

|Good point. He's supposed to be versatile. After the Tour, she don't be covering bike races exclusively. She may be asked to go from France to Calgery to cover the Stampede. There, she'll have to learn just enough about giant Canadian rodeos/ciruses to host a show. Rodeo fans shouldn't expect her to be an expert.
True hard-core cycling fans have little or no use for her. Viewers who have never seen or participated in a bike race before would definitely be lost and possibly turned off from watch a race that's too complicated to understand and enjoy without a tuitorial.
I think non-cycling fans are more comfortable having a novice on the scene, asking the on-air questions they, themselves would ask if they could. Problems arrise when they try to turn it into a kind of "Today" show.

|Her beauty balances out Bobke's ugly-factor quite well.
I for one feel really lucky to have this announcing team. Phil and Paul, the greats. Bobke the screwball who's finally found his Niche. And Kirsten who ties it all together with a smile. This team is 100% than anything we've had before. Where's Bob Varsha.
Kirsten's new to job but she's not ignorant. She's sincere and enthusiastic. She makes watching the long coverage pleasant and well-balanced. Like I said before, forget those khaki shirts on her. Let her wear some good, like the ones on Fox Sports Net.
She's a hottie and they're making her more homely to fit the Hick audience. I think this year, she's covered the Everest climb, Totally Nascar, ESPN Outdoors hunting, and News anchor. If she sticks with the tour a couple more years (like Ligget) she's going to be good. I have a feeling though she's headed for bigger things.
p.s. I'd also like to comment that I'm happy Bob Roll has found his niche. He was terribly annoying on the play-by-play announcing with Phil and Paul. He was totally outclassed and his memorized bullcrap was often annoying and distracting from the action. He's perfect though on the half-time desk. His parodies on himself are just marvelous! He's also a genius for jumping into mountain biking at it's peak and abandonining mountain biking on tv died this year.

i couldn't stand kirsten at first. she's no great shakes now, but i think she's improved a bit. does anyone else think she and bob have done the dirty deed together? they look at each other with googly eyes these days when reporting.

|I got that same vibe. Bobke may well be taking Kirsten for a ride during those long "transitions" from one stage to another.|

|Yeah, you can tell something is in the air with Kirsten and Bob.
I think Kirsten is a pretty good announcer. She doesn't have to be a cycling expert... that's why Phil, Bob, etc are there. She does a good job of tying it all together and setting those other guys up for commentary. All she has to do is say "Wow, what a day. Bob, what do you think of blah blah blah" and then let Bob roll with it (no pun intended). She's eye candy and enthusiastic so I give her the thumbs up.

|This guy is butchering history with his 1 minute tour breifs on Hinault. In the 1986 tour it wasn't JF Bernard and Hinault that broke away and rode to the top of the summit together ..it was Pedro Delgado. They were showing Hinault and Delgado climbing together and he refers to him as J-F Bernard. Grrrrr Bernard couldn't have made that climb with Hinault even if he had a rocket up his arse.|
