why sprint for 40th place?DougSloan

Regularly I see riders in the Tour sprinting for places well out of the points or time bonus. Why would they? I'd think they'd save their energy for the next day.

I agree with you, it seems pretty useless to sprint for certain placings. Top 10, certainly. Top 20, maybe. Anything after that just seems .... pointless (pun intended).

I'm sure they are just trying to minimize loses in time if nothing else. Some teams take the team competition rather seriously. The teams are still close in those rankings and the domestiques can make a difference.

I find it comical when it is done in the ametuer ranks. If I'm not in a good position at the critical point of a race finish, I move out of the way and sit up. Some people just can't stand being dropped. Even if it is with just 200 meters to go. I've seen enough bonehead crashes to know better. The guy sprinting for 30th ends up taking out ten guys behind him? No thanks!
but you get the same time as the group, don't you? nmDougSloan

The entire group gets the same time as the first guy in the group. If key opponents are in
i another
group, you could loose or a few seconds easily.

Also consider that in a large group the difference in placing from the front to back could be a significant number of places. Let's say a group of 50 is sprinting for 25th place. This sprint could mean the difference between 25th place and 75th. Although their time may be the same, the placing may be worth sprinting for.

I have to admit I'm giving these guys the benefit of the doubt. There are races within the race that go beyond the colored jerseys. I figure something is giving them reason to go for it.

OTOH, I could be wrong. Maybe they just do it because they don't want to be LAST. No one wants to be the Lantern 'rouge (sp?).
