Look at his jaw. Every muscle on the guy is at max contraction. He's seeing the tour slip away in front of his eyes while he takes a trip into the hinterlands. I'll be very anxious to see it tonight on OLN and hear the boy's comments. This is turning out to be a VERY intersting tour.
Here's what he said (Yahoo News link above) ...Humma Hah

"His tyre exploded and it was impossible for him to stay on his bike. I had to do a little bit of cyclo-cross in the field but I had the scare of my life," he added.

GAP, France (AP) -- Lance Armstrong kept his overall lead in the Tour de France on Monday after a harrowing ride in the Alps in which he narrowly avoided a crash involving a main rival.

Armstrong, bidding for a record-tying fifth consecutive title, finished fourth in the ninth stage.

``I was scared like never before,'' he said. ``It was a real panic. In a moment like that, it's a survival instinct.''

I don't have sound here at work! The video has Beloki's rear wheel circled and enlarged and I imagine they're describing what's happening. Anybody know?
Sorry its all in French - I don't speak French(nm)PatM

Could he have been saying to his team manager "Can you hear me now??"

... which shows that his cell phone must have slid WAY down the road. His right hand isn't anywhere near his head, in spite of how that picture appears.

I think he's just really happy at that instant that Lance hung a left, considering what he would have been watching happen if Lance held his line.

It is a painful scene I wouldn't have wished on anyone except a few terrorists and dictators, but considering the speed and the close proximity of about 185 other riders, it could have been a LOT worse. He lived.
You can see the tire rolled off the rim... nmnoveread

See my Eurosport quote above. Other reports said he locked his rear brake. Phil and Paul said the road was getting very dangerous, oily and sticky at the same time due to the heat. He may have hit an oily spot which caused his wheel to lock and skid, thus causing a blow out. Lance thought the conditions were too precarious to be going that fast (but he was still on his tail, that's what ultimate competition does to you).

Yeah, I know, but LOOK at the picture, it rolled. I imagine it blew after it rolled.

In my experience, a flat tire is pretty likely to roll off the rim, while a tire that has rolled off the rim is not all that likely to go flat (unless it locks the wheel into a skid). I think the explosion probably came first, and the roll-off came later, but I could be wrong.

Is that a sew up Beloki's riding, I assume? What does lance ride?
Yes, Lance uses sew-ups, Hutchison, I believe (nm)TJeanloz

Well, I have no personal experience with tubies so I will defer as to what came first, exploding or rolling, but I still think it for sure rolled.

Phil and Paul had mentioned (during an earlier descent today) that one danger with the fast descents is that the tire rim heats up considerably when you brake for the hairpin turns, and that this can cause the glue holding the tire to the rim to soften up, and the tire to roll off the rim.

Some other commentator had said that Beloki went into the turn too fast, and got on the brakes.

It would be interesting to hear what Beloki has to say about what he thinks happened.

Lance would have been nosing over in the ditch by the policeman. Take a look at the video and see how close he comes to that culvert when he first goes off road.
Is that his climbing bike?Humma Hah
Jul 14, 2003 10:19 AM
Did he do that cyclocross on a 14-lb climbing bike? I'd have guessed those things were stupid-light, but this suggests otherwise.

I imagine he'll not ride THAT one again, tho'.
I can see the Trek ad now. nmMel Erickson
