|He lost a lot of time today, but was that a set up to be allowed to contest the victory on Alp d'Huez? He's over nine minutes back from Armstrong, and not much of threat in that position. US Postal is more concerned about Ullrich and Beloki at this point and probably wouldn't put in a massive effort to chase down Simoni if he attacks early, like from the Galibier. I know he didn't look great on the Col de la Ramaz, but it is hard to really believe he couldn't climb with the top 30 or so riders in the race, unless he didn't eat or drink enough.|

|Forget to mention: Canondale can't buy a break. First
bankruptcy, then they make a big fanfare of their new
carbon/aluminum bike, with special jerseys for the Saeco
riders protesting the UCI weight limit. Then their top
rider seemingly can't hang on the climb. Not great advertising.

|Yeah he didn't look to good. After all that talk and how does he perform first day in the mountains? Simoni is a lot better than that, something went horribly wrong for him today.|

|Morzine was horrible for me. Oh, my God, I was so warm I went crazy. Today when I arrived at the hotel, not so far from the finish line, I dived into the swimming pool. It was so refreshing. But now, give me my room, my shower, my bed. I prayed to "Napo", my masseur, to close the windows. I need to sleep just a little bit. I need to understand what is happening.
I'm not the same rider. Just one week ago Gilberto Simoni was another person. In seven days I've destroyed my dream. I came to France to defeat Armstrong and all the bests. Look at me now. My physic is empty, as well as my legs. This is Tour de France, and my friends if you make a mistake, just one, you're dead. The team time trial was a disaster for me: I accepted the results. I raised my spirits and will. But my body hasn't passed through this heart-quake. Look at my legs, I have the fever.
Tomorrow I must face Alpe d'Huez--what an awful task. Lance Armstrong and his teammates managed the race well today. I'm very surprised at Richard Virenque's victory. He had a fantastic performance. I'm so far away from all of them it's terrible. Switch off the light and let me nap.
Today our team wore a black and white jersey instead of our normal colors. Our jersey was to protest the decision to ban our new lightweight bikes. Guys, look at it: it's really fantastic this new model Cannondale built for me. It's absolutely unique cause of its weight. I've never had such a light one till now! It's really a pity that my legs were so heavy today.
Good night friends, see you tomorrow.

|If he was acting he should be up for an Oscar. He had me fooled, especially with that nasty looking crusty lip. My guess is that if he can't compete for the win tomorrow he will pack it up and head back to Italy.

|...that Simoni has a fever and the foam on his lip was the result of herpes???
(no true cure once you get that)
