PETACCHI!!! NUMBER 4!(19 posts)

Jul 11, 2003 7:04 AM
What a finish...too bady for O'Grady and Geslin, who led for almost 200km, and led up to the last 2 kms. Petacchi is unbelievable.

Like McEwan said yesterday, Petacchi is just doing everything right. Of course, they keep comparing him to Cipo, so I wonder if that means he'll drop out in the mountains? I must say I love watching the finale of the sprints with all the craziness at the front and Phil yelling out commentary. Makes for great viewing!

... he won't have to quit. He'll get booted for finishing outside the time gap!
He was also riding injured.MXL02

He got booted after a brutal stage 18 and was injured at the time...I think this guy is for real, and is going to be a serious contender for the green jersey.

... on Petacchi. I think the guy is phenomenal. I remember him from last year driving a smaller group chasing down a break. I think it was the stage Millar won. Anyway, after being the strongest rider in the chase, he smacked himself in the head for missing his opportunity to win the stage by a few hundred meters. I knew then that he was on the verge of either making a name for himself, or exhausting himself in the process. Good to see his conditioning is paying off.

He also seems a little more humble than Cipo. While the attitude worked for Mario, it would be nice to see someone of the same caliber exercize a little more penache in the way they present themselves.
I have to admit...MXL02

I am really liking this guy, not only as an athlete, but as a person. I hope he doesn't disappoint me.

No comparisons please: "I am Petacchi!"

I think that's cool. He doesn't even want to be compared. He knows no one will probably ever duplicate Cipo's style and attitude, he wants to write his own names to the record books.

On a side note - what about that O'Grady today, eh? Not bad for a guy written off as a sprinter.

They lead until the last 200 Meters not 2 kms according to the audio feed that I was listening to. That's gotta hurt
They got caught at 500m from the finish,MXL02

according to Tour web site. The commentary was so loud and exciting I couldn't tell exactly where they got caught. What a great stage!

and it looked like the breakaway made it to well inside the final kilometer, maybe 500 meters to go. Bettini did a monster lead-out (for Paolini?) that swept them up, but then Petacchi came out of the group and crushed everybody. Neither Zabel or McEwen were there as they crashed on the run-in to town.
Where is the streaming video?mfuchs1

I think it's from the Danish TV coverage. My computer at work doesn't have audio, so I just watched it. But you can get live audio from OLN or Eurosport to listen to while watching video there (or you could try to learn some Danish). It'll come in handy on Sunday when there is no live coverage on OLN.

McEwen, Zabel and Kirsipuu so far back? From reading the stage results, it looked like they were no where near contesting the sprint.

McEwen and Zabel crashed. I don't know if the same happened to Kirsipuu.
