Pantani and Coast / Bianchi(23 posts)

Pantani and Coast / Bianchicyclerant
May 27, 2003 6:15 PM
If Marco joins Coast Bianchi is he working for Jan?
How will that work out? Assume both want to give Lance a run for his money, but who will the team work for? With the amount of money spent on Jan I would aasume Pantani would be driving up the pace on the climbs to blow out the pack, but with this being Pantani and Ulrich's return to the tour doesn't one think that it will be tough to control the 2?
Thoughts.
Admit not a Marco fan, but the only cheap shot I would take would be at his loyalty to a team that stuck with him even with all the hoopla over the past few non performing years. If this is ok then why not sign Cipo and let him ride for Coast to get him in the tour?

don't think elefantino would stand for being a domestique. he wants to be a challenger, wouldn't work with Jan. Too many bulls in the pen.

on an overall Tour win that are realistic. I really believe he still is sore over the "letting him win" stage of a few years ago. He plans to settle the score by trying to crush Lance in the mountains.

maybe he ought to get started in the mountains now, in the Giro. What's his best in a mt. stage. 5th?

Pantani might be the team leader and Jan might be put in the domestique role.
To begin with, Jan Ullrich himself has stated that he doesn't think he can win the Tour this year because of his knee, not being in shape, etc. Jan said he believes 2004 will be his year.
Next, Pantani has progressively ridden himself into better and better shape this season and riding the Giro has definately helped him begin to find his form.
Pantani is Italian, so is Bianchi. Pantani won the Giro and tour on a Bianchi.
etc, etc.
btw, many riders have failed to perform 100% in the Giro and then gone on to win the Tour (think of Greg Lemond). If Pantani can find his legs he could be a serious threat, or maybe he'll just be fighting for another 10th place and a possible stage win. It will all depend on who's in better shape when the race begins.

even if he returns to peak form for his age, Lance will squash him like a bug. I'm sure LA is a bit miffed at Elefantino's indignation as well. On that stage Lance let him go, waited with group, then reeled him in, paced him to the line and 'gave' him the victory. If Pantani get's to the Tour LA will settle this. besides what true GC dominator form has Pantani shown since being busted? I don't think he can compete without dope.
Pantani is a narcissist with the ego to match...Djudd

but he has got to know he is no longer a GC contender. His only solace is taking on LA in the mountains. Maybe he can make the tour interesting
he looks like he has a few pounds to loosecyclopathic

if he looses 5lbs that could be a different story. And don't forget he hates LA, that would push him uphill alone ;)
he should lose 5 lbs. today (5/29)Leroy

did you see the profile of today's stage? We'll see what he, and everybody else, has got. Looks like the party's over for the sprinters - look who's gone: Cipo, McEwen, etc.
Pantani breaks collarbone?Dropped

Don't look now, but Pantani just crashed on a descent in the Giro and is out. Looks to be the collarbone.

Damn, and Lance was starting to get nervous about Pantani in the tour (**snicker**)

Hopefully you're joking, otherwise don't come on to this message board if you don't wan't to read results or events that occur in a race. It says cleary below the Tour-Giro Vuelta mb link, DISCUSS THE LATEST RESULTS FROM THE LATEST RACES. If someone is planning on watching a race and is stupid enough to come on to this mb they deserve to have the race spoiled. It's not up to the writer of the discussion or the reply to have to boldly write "spoiler" in the title of the discussion when the purpose of the board is to discuss results. Enough said.

Agree, rules were cleary set in this post pre Giro. No Spoilers here. Ya don't wanna know, don't read.

it isn't FAIR GAME to write result or revelations in topic, you just not required to mark it as spoiler.

quit whining. If you don't want to know the results of a race, don't read discussions on this message board. This whole "spoiler" bs started during the 2001 tdf when oln started covering races because people were discussing results on the general message board before the race was shown on tv, so people at work who wanted to watch the race when they got home would already know who won. As a result, several new message boards were made including the Tour-Giro-Vuelta board so that results could be discussed without upsetting people who were planning on watching the race later.

In the Tour-Giro forum, you can post any way you want, including results in the topic line and not spoiler indication.

If you post in other forums, and want to include reference to results, do not do so in the topic line and note "spoiler" or "results" in the topic line. Those are the rules we devised after extended discussion.

"bottom line on spoilers (Giro starts tomorrow)"

Posted by: DougSloan May-09-03, 10:10 AM

Since the Giro starts tomorrow, I suppose we'd better get this clarified.
Without reciting all the reasons discussed in other threads, here is what we'll do:

1. No spoilers, without disclosure, in any forum other than the Tour/Giro Forum. If you discuss results in any other forum, do not reveal results in the topic line, and put "spoiler" or "results" in the topic line. All posts not in compliance will be deleted, and if people persist in violating the rules, they risk getting banned.

2. The Tour/Giro forum is wide open fair game. Don't go there if you don't want to see results.

Doug

Clearly states to disclose SPOILER In all other forumsOTHER than this Forum. No one contested, I seconded the motion. Passed by 2 nil margin.

1. Pantani doesn't hate LA, that was long ago, they respect eachother to a certain point.

2. Pantani has made a great comeback and is more popular in Italy than simoni, only less popular than Chipo.

3. If Pantani and Ullrich were on the same team, they would use eachother in the mountains, and since Ullrich has an advantage in the TT, he would be the team leader.

Maybe you should try turning the sound on in your TV so you can actually hear what they say about riders. You can also go to places like www.velonews.com or www.cyclingnews.com

That way you can stop making up stuff, that you wish was true for various reasons, and posting it for us all to stare at and think, what the hell is that guy talking about.

"3. If Pantani and Ullrich were on the same team, they would use eachother in the mountains, and since Ullrich has an advantage in the TT, he would be the team leader."

It actually depends on who is the stronger rider. If Pantani is taking several minutes out of Ullrich in the mountain stages and Ullrich is only finishing 30 seconds or a minute ahead of Pantani in the tt's, Pantani will obviously be the leader. Right now, Pantani looks to be improving every day and will most likely be a lot stronger than Ullrich in the Tour if Bianchi lets him ride because he's had so much more racing and training this season. If Pantani rides a couple of small races between the end of the Giro and the start of the Tour to maintain his condition he could seriously be an overall contender (top 5 or top 10).

which top level tour team plays musical chairs with their GC honch? I don't think any team manager wants the intersquad chaos of another Lemond-Hinault where the domestiques split and basically turned the team into 2. Read Velonews, Pantaini was quoted as "I'm the guy to beat Lance". You think he's going to work for another? Remember when Bobby Jullich was quoted (in his USPS) days as (paraphrased) I'll work for LA but if there's an opp. for me I'll take it. Result: released, joined Cofidis. The TdF is a team race and you have to designate a captain otherwise strategy is reduced to a "let's see who does better and go from there". If Coast/Bianchi does this they will either force one to be GC or turn their team to chaos. I'm not saying they won't do it, but watch out if they do.
