I want to see cipo in the tour just as much as the next guy, but with fears that he won't make it through the mountains...is the solution to give him a moutain bike. Is this serious or is velonews making a joke. Wouldn't it make more sense to just give him a triple.
what is the deal? any one seen picts of this full suspension climbing machine?

|a HEAVY f/s mtb would make no sense..you can get same gearing on a road frame by changing out parts...had to be marketing..|

|you can make time going down, esp on hairy descent
weight penalty isn't that big you can build FS under 20lbs with fat tires. Changing to slicks would reduce it by extra ~2lbs

|There is a road near here with some 55 mph descents; you may recall my talking about it when doing some tests on the cervelo vs. normal road bikes.
I easily went just as fast on a full suspension road bike with 1.5 inch slicks as on the Cervelo when there were turns. Suspension, as with cars, makes the tires stick better, so you can push the bike to the limits with far more confidence.
I still don't think you'd make up for the weight and efficiency penalties on the climbs, though.

|I forgot to mention that I went "just as fast" (as recently) 5 years ago when my road descending skills were not nearly as sharp as they are now; I have no doubt I'd go faster on the fs bike than a road bike now.

|That doesn't make any sense. I haven't done a great deal of climbing, but to haul a heavier, full-suspension MTB up Zoncalan would be nuts. Lighter is better when riding up inclines.|

|UCI guys would run to the rulebook on this one..they are legal in mtbike racing which UCI controls...only positive would be to cushion him, making it easier on a bum shoulder. If you completely tricked out the best f/s mtb you can get them down near 20 lbs. I still say it might be marketing...was/is going to appear in ads for the mtb...|

|It's a diamond frame. You'd have to put drop bars on it, but otherwise I think it meets UCI regulations for road bikes. I'm not aware of any restrictions against suspension, except for novelty, but I don't think that would apply.

|There are restictions on wheel base and tube size...so their might be problems. But, the UCI has a track record of making up rules on the fly, in the name of integrity and historical perspective.|

|yes I do. poor chap with all his crazy new riding positions, superman etc... I just can't fathom doing 50 plus mph on my FS MTB. no problem on a road bike, I think I'd get twitchy on an MTB.|

|I read the preview of the stage on cyclingnews, the one where some locals went up the climb and took photos. They described the road as being rough, and barely suitable for riding on.
Maybe it's just one of those Cipo things to do: Comment about the state of the road by riding a mountainbike. It would get his name in an article about the stage, since he would not have got any press for coming in 20 minutes down from Simoni.
