Giro stage 2. Payback?cyclopathic

though most of the stage was flat and boring it was fun to watch Mercatone Uno making sure Cipo won't get a shot. If Pantani gets transfer to Domina for tour that would be what I call skillful negotiation ;)

may have made more of that case than it deserved. Pantani claims (on cyclingnews.com) than he just put his team on the front because there was no organization and he wanted to stay up front out of trouble. Plus he's not bad in a reduced bunch sprint, so he probably was looking for a result, and wanted to keep ANY sprinters who were dropped from getting back. Didn't pan out, but I really doubt he put his team on the front to specifically keep Cipo from getting back on.

Maybe it WAS the editing and commentary. But that demonic smile on Pantini's newly aerodynamicized face (I prefer his old ears -- he was much more recognizable) made it seem like he was pleased as punch to be dropping Cipo's group.

Pantani in Velonews claimed he'll win the Giro and be the only real challenge to Lance in the Tour. He's just trying to get some publicity. Too bad, it's coming at the cost of his team. If he really intends on winning the Giro, that was a dumb move, working your team so hard for absolutely nothing but to pip Cippo. They'll have nothing left for the Dolomites or Italian Alps and he'll be no challenge at all.
