|Anyone else hate Paul Sherwen???||neo|
Jul 24, 2002 1:13 PM
|Buy this guy a thesaurus. If I hear "ticking off" or "ticking over a gear" any more................. Last year, it was on the rivet" and "the peloton is getting crazy now" (heard every stage with about 10K to go)....... He must pick a "phrase of the year" and see how many times he can use it in a broadcast. |
For those alcoholics in the TV audiance, instead of playing the "Bob Newhart" game, pick a "Sherwenism" and drink every time he says it.............if you last past 9:00 AM, your a better drinker than I!!!!
Also, does Sherwen need to sound so formal and attempt to pronouce everthing in the native language? He doesn't need to give the first and last name, and team name, any any accomplishment of their's over the past decade, of every rider out there. Yes, I understand he is trying to get the "lowest common denomenator", the causal TV watcher who by accident, clicks on OLN and watches for a bit, interested in the Tour, but trust me, most of us watching will know the riders and teams by this point.
Beggars cannot be choosers, and I know that with OLN, we are now able to watch an event that prevously we could not. The third member of the team (I am sorry, I cannot think of his name now, but the American...no, not Bob Roll) is great. I was watching him call a sailing race on OLN, and he sounded very knowledgable. Put him in the booth.

|I hate OLN, I despise the Lincoln Navigator, Die CBS. That Lance guy is arrogant and Beloki is a loser.
Does that about sum up all the whining about the Tour? C'mon, let's count our blessings guys. We're watching 2 hours a day of some of the greatest climbing by the best athletes run by a good organization and great commentating. My hats off to everyone who has made this possible.
sorry neo, I've cracked with all the daily complaints here.

|Sorry, I don't agree. I'm so used to these guys that the Liggettisms and Sherwinisms are endearing to my ears no matter how repetitive or inane.|

|What?! You like that dopey guy (the third American, not Roll, who nobody can remeber his name) better than Sherwen? |
At least Paul has turned over or "ticked over" a pedal. That other guy doesn't have a clue about cycling. I think Sherwin's kinda funny and like his stories (and humility) about being off the back so many times in the mountains............

|At least they understand the sport. Since cycling is treated as a "novelty" item on mainstream sports shows, half the time you have to listen to some nitwit wonder aloud if drafting really works.|
|Don't bring Phil L into this....||Old_school_nik|
Jul 25, 2002 6:28 AM
|I couldn't disagree with you more. Its onet hing to snap on paul its another to bring my man Phil into this. What part is it that you don't like about Phil L? - the fact that Phil has coverred tours for 30 years or that fact taht he knows every detail about every rider and can recognize them with out a spotter ?- or is it his knowledge of Tour History or maybe his correct pronunciation of every language?
Phil is simply the best in the business - Unreal to complain about Phil. - Maybe you would like John Madden doing the calling with his telestrator drawing of the peloton.

Ditto to what the other guy said. How about John Madden? Or even better Scott Hamilton and Tracey whatsername, that do ice skating at the Olympics?

|Madden: You see there? Armstrong puts the chain thingy on the big ring by the back wheel and...BOOM!!! he just runs away from the lineman...er...I mean Beloki...
Summerall: Right you are John. Now, let's check in with Leslie Visser for a sideline report with Robin Williams on waterbottle hygene...

|I hesitate to criticize the boys as they are truely part of the sport and this event in particular, nevertheless....I have tried to accept the good with the bad, but Paul has annoyed me some recently. Aside from all that you mention, Paul actually says some inaccurate, even manipulative things to try to build anticipation, drama, etc. and he sounds like an ass when he does it. My personal, though admittedly stupid gripe, is when he says that so-and-so has LITERALLY blown the peloton to pieces. I look up expecting to see body parts all over the road and a spectators cringing in terror.
OTOH, I do not like Bill Patrick, if that is his name, because he doesn't know much about cycling, has a falsetto tone, and also says deliberately simplistic and misleading things....at least we get the coverage.

Jul 26, 2002 6:32 AM
|I'm with all the folks who love Phil and Paul and their catch phrases. When I'm out on a ride I can just hear their voices in my head commenting on my ride. I've got this idea of a jersey with their mugs on the back and a couple speech bubbles. Paul says, "He's turning over a huge gear, having the ride of his life today" and Phil replies, "Yes, indeed. They'll never catch him now"
|As always, people don't read the entire post!!||neo|
Jul 26, 2002 12:56 PM
|If you did, you will see that I AM grateful that OLN is covering this and other cycling events. Doesn't mean I have to like the innane banter.|
