A question for you tour mavens:LAIrish

I've seen a couple of sites that said Lance is better in the Alps than he is in the Pyrenees. Evidently, the mountain stages there are shorter but steeper, which is to Lance's advantage?

Any of you tour mavens know if this is true?
I don't think so.Sintesi

He's opened the gaps in the Pyrenees and the Alps with relative ease. No matter which direction the tour is going (i.e. Alps first or Pyrenees first) LA has his 4-6 minutes 3 stages into the mountains. I don't think it makes a difference.

don't really think it matters. Last year he won 2 stages in the Alps and had a 1st and a second in the Pyrenees. This year 2 firsts in the South and we'll see, one third and my guess is at least one stage win in the alps (my guess will be wed. over Gallibier and Madeleine). He rocks both with equal aplomb.
does he have "enough" lead now?DougSloan

Right now, Lances doesn't need to put more time on anyone to win. No one can beat him by 4 minutes in a time trial. So, my point is that we may not get to know. As long as he stays with anyone who could challenge the GC, he's home safe, and may not ride as hard as he could.

No body is 4 minutes better than Lance in a time trial.

But is Beloki with the best time trial in his life 4 minutes better than Lance feeling a little off because of some bad fruit, a flat tire, then a broken chain, then a slippery spot where Lance has to go around an idiot spectator, causing a crash all the way off the course and down a gully (a la' Ullrich) but with a bent wheel.

Remember Lance took a full two minutes out of Beloki in just the last 7 km the other day. This is the Tour de France. If I was Lance, I think I might want to buy some insurance minutes in the last couple of mountain stages.

I guess he'll just wait for the best opportunity to make some more time. Lance seems to do relatively better in successive hard days.

He'll add minutes in the alps but only when it's safe and not too taxing to do so. He'll defend his lead and launch in the last few K and grab a minute or so. Max benefit with Min. effort and risk.
