LA gearing in TTtmotz

When they did side shots of LA in the TT.I noticed he was in the small ring up front.Any one know how those bikes are geared? I know he pushes cadence over gear smashing but that seemed strange.

TT cranks are usually 54-56 for the big ring and 42-50 for the little ring. If it's flat they'll go with the bigger rings. Rear casseetes are usually 12-21

A 43, 44, 45 has pretty good rollout up a rise with a 21 in the back, but is low enough to stay on top of. There's also less of an adjustment in cadence, shifting to the large ring, with less loss of speed, or sudden increase of effort to get on top of the gear. Notice how the rings are closer together on TT bikes?
