A Mystery has been Solved...
We've been trying for some time to track down the validity of the very nice "SLEDGEHAMMER" story. We found out it was written about Lance by Kelme rider Santiago Botero for the Spanish newspaper La Siesta during training for the 2001 Tour de France.
The article details Botero getting caught and dropped during a chance meeting on a training climb in the Spanish Pyrenees and the ensuing respect it garnered.
"The Gringo has been training hard," writes Botero, "With one sledgehammer strapped at each ankle I was astonished how the Gringo was climbing. When I looked down at the small ball-pean hammers attached to my own ankles I knew that I would never beat the Gringo.
I learned much from the Gringo in the mountains. I will never forget the helpless feeling I had yesterday. If I ever become a Tour champion, I will always remember the lesson the Gringo taught me."
