I asked this on the Racing discussion board and I fear that most people seem to be on the tdf board. As the question is relevant here as well I didn't think it would hurt.

So, what is a prime? I have heard them mentioned in crit races and now I've just seen that the last stage of the tdf TdF has 6 in the final part of the last stage

Can anyone enlighten me?

and a prime ("preem") is just a sprinting prize set for a certain lap of a criterium. I've even seen pro races where they had a prime on every lap of $1000.

So instead of getting bonus points towards the green, they are fiscally rewarded instead? That makes sense.

Thanks.
