I don't know what you guys think but, is he annoying or what???, I personally think he is like a fish out of the water, OLN should let Phil, Paul and Bob Roll run the show. What do you think??

I don't think Bob himself is annoying. For a fish out of water he's actually pretty good. Obviously a professional broadcaster.

However, I do think his roll in the TdF coverage is a bit annoying. Seems to me sort of a waste of time for him to give us a little blurb about something and then send it back to Phil and Paul.

The thing we have to remember is that OLN (presumeably) is playing to a larger audience than just us roadie types. For them to be successful they need a larger audience than RBR.com has. They need wives, kids, adults who haven't ridden a "two wheeler" since they were kids. If it works and OLN is financially successful they'll likely renew their contract. If it is unsuccessful, they won't. For my cable buck, I'm hoping they renew. What we have this year is easily 1000% better than what we had in years past.

Basically what I'm saying is, I'll live with it to avoid 30 minutes on ESPN with that overgrown blonde college football sideline announcer. Karsten should definitely stick to doing stories about "Ralphie" the buffalo at the CU-NU games.

Not only that, the sap factor is still WAY less than other networks coverage of a sporting event like this. Remember NBC and the Olympics? YUCCK! Bravo OLN!!!
What's up with the OLN girls?trimble

OLN has too many people on-air. They ought to know from their Giro coverage from the last two years (which I think was superb) that three on-air folks is plenty. Send Varsha home. Send the OLN girls with him. More Bobke, please!
I say give 'em a break...jba

He's doing fine. He fits in because he is a "newbie" to professional cycling and perhaps will make it more comfortable for non-cycling fans who are flipping through channels to watch this very complex and beautiful sport. As mentioned in the previous post, the guy is professional at what he's doing and he's showing a good appreciation for the race and the sport. At least he's not making completely clueless race comments and going on lost tangents about the french like karsten did.

Varsha is providing a link between the sport of cycling and the newcomer fans. Some people may remember him from other sports he's worked in. Besides, the eloquent commentary of liggett and sherwen can be daunting to virgin ears! :) "...and if that's not throwing the cat amongst the pigeons!" "... and he's turning his pedals in anger at having his maillot jaune taken from him!" I love those two guys!

I drag raced for years. He was a commentator at a few IHRA national events I raced at, including two I runner-upped at. It was a hoot to see this bozo wearing a suit in 100-degree weather with his wind-tunnel tested hair, dripping with sweat. He should stick to the local news!
Bob Varsha vs. Adrian Karsten?? Cmon its easy Varsha all the waySpyder Ryder

Of course Phil and Paul are living gods and Bobke is a saint but we do need some sort of mortal interaction on the tour
He's getting bettermr_spin

Every day he seems to be getting better. Today I hardly noticed him, which is how it is supposed to be. You can't question his professionalism--he is doing what they asked him to do.

What IS truly annoying is all the Mercury Mountaineer and Post Office commercials. I would rather listen to Bob talk for hours than see that stupid runawayshoes.com commercial. In fact, I would rather stick pins in my eyes.

Bob has definitely improved his knowledge of cycling from last year. I have to admire him for that. I remember Frankie Andreu mentioning that Bob Varsha was brought in for the "Preview of the 2001 Tour" special (with J Vaughters and Bob Roll that aired about 500 times) because he knew how to pull a "live" show together within the tight timelines on TV. Guess they need time to air the runawayshoes commercials. Perhaps they could have at least shot different endings to that? Maybe one with the guy getting beaten like Rodney King by the security guards?

I would surmise that OLN and Speedvison are owned by the same organization. Varsha is on Speedvison way more often. I also noticed that Sam Posey, also involved with motorsports, was narrating the OLN 1/2 hour shows on the Tour De France.

Perhaps fans of rodeo action are displeased to see Peter Young of "Bicycle Journal" wearing a big, stupid cowboy hat and doing commentary on "Calgary Stampede?" Now HE seems out of his element!

I do however wish that Bob Roll had a bigger part to play in the tour. The man knows cycling from the gutter on up and has some great stories to tell. There will never be another Phil and Paul.

My opinion only,
