During the broadcasts the announcers will generally mention the speeds the riders are at every once in a while. Today's stage is a very flat stage and not at all typical of the bulk of all the stages, of which most are in the mountains. Some of the riders yesterday were on 55 rings and hammering. During last years Tour and during the Giro speeds reach up to 70kph or 45+mph on some of the descents. My guess is the bulk of the riders today "averaged" 30mph. Just a guess though.

the couse was 120 or so miles long (194.5k, I think). I'm sure the finishing times are posted somewhere. If GC times are listed, subtract yesterday's avg time.

I avg'd 14.5 today--and didn't have to do math.
okay already _I_ did the mathWadeOmatic

4:55:15 converts to 4.94 hours / 194.5km converts to 120.59miles

equals 24.4 mph avg. DAMM that's smokin...

so I got crazy with the Velonews site and my calculator. Don't expect this sort of AVG SPD coverage every stage.

Sorry to be pedantic, but the winning time in the Prolouge was 9:20. Over the 8.2km course, this is an average of just over 54 kph, which translates to just over 32mph.

There won't be a TT in this tour where the average speed is beneath 30mph.

Pedanticism rules. I fouled up the hour/minutes/seconds conversion on both calculations. It really showed up on the TT because 20 seconds is a significant part of 9:20. Much more so than 15 is to 4:55:15.
