Heading out to Bend in a couple weeks and was looking for some advice on a good 50-60 mile route. Some climbing is essential. I've done a lot of mountain biking in the area, but no road rides. Any suggestions appreciated.

Much of your route selection may be determined by the snow level - it was actually spitting a bit of snow in town this evening.

If it is climbing you are after, you could always do the out and back to Mt. Bachelor. It is about 25 miles up and 25 back with about a 2500 vertical foot gain.

A shorter local loop that is nice goes out Newport Ave. which turns into Shevlin Rd. You ride past Shevlin Park, Tumalo State Park, and at least one other park. I believe that loop is only about 20 miles or so, though.

If the snow has cleared, there is a short window of time that you can ride over Hwy 242 outside of Sisters without any traffic - there is sometimes a month or so that you can get on the road before they open the gates to allow vehicles through. This is one of my favorites - incredible views and great climbing. If you are willing to do the climb back up on the west side of the pass, the dsecent is well worth it!

Other than that, my best advice would be to check in at one of the shops which host regular group rides:

enjoy your visit!

On the mountain bike side of things, do you know whether the trails in the Phil's Trail area are clear of snow? I think that they are low enough that they should be clear now, but last time I said that about a trail out there, the area was under 6 feet of snow still (in May!!).
should be in good shaperockbender

I havn't actually been out mountain biking in that area yet this year (I am ashamed, I know) but I hear that its just fine right now. Should actually be in excellent shape before the summer dust/looseness settles in.
Thanks!!!! nmRJF

if so, there is the Bend Bicycle fest going on that might be worth checking out - probably some good group rides.
