|I don't live there, but most of Milpitas is flat and boring (ridewise) and kind of industrial. Plus, there are some major roads that run right through town, bringing lots of traffic. For my money, you need to get out of town to do decent riding.
Probably the best and closest route is Calaveras Road, a great place to ride through the hills. Do this at least once while you are out here--it is a really great ride. Caleveras Blvd actually runs right through the center of Milpitas, but I'd be scared to ride on it! It turns into Caleveras Road past I-680. I'm sure there's a better way to get to it than riding the Blvd. Disclaimer: there are some steep but short climbs off the valley floor, so don't say I didn't warn you!
Also not too far away is Mt. Hamilton, which is a 5,000 foot climb. You can ride to both of these if you can find a good route out of town. It's not as brutal as a 5,000 foot climb sounds! Anyone can do it.
If you have a car, head west to ride the Santa Cruz Mountains or the foothills in Saratoga, Palo Alto, and Woodside. Or head to South San Jose and ride for miles through rolling hills.
