Road or mountain.

I've heard there's a converted railway trail that crosses route 28. I plan to hit that one day. Any other good rides? I do have a car if necessary.

Thanks

Try this site: http://bikewashington.org/ The W&OD trail is the one you are referring to, and there is parking at a trailhead on Route 28.

if you are looking for a club ride, take a look at http://www.restonbikeclub.org

That railroad grade is paved, some parallel unpaved trail. If you like cyclocross, a little further north is the C&O towpath, which goes something like 160 miles end to end.

Come down south on 28 to Nokesville, and there are country roads galore that have very light traffic on a weekend, and are a delight to ride. MB1 has put on several fixed-gear centuries in the area between Nokesville, the Quantico Marine Base, Remington, and Casanova.

I've found a number of good roads around Manassas, and some really bad ones. MB1 reports many good routes INSIDE the beltway, including many in DC itself. Fairfax County is famous for roads unsuitable for cycling, but even there some riders know their way around.

Along the Potomac there are various recreational trails. I was on one this spring and saw about a dozen bald eagles at one location.
