I'm staying in Lewes DE over Memorial Day. Big race the next weekend. I can't skip 3 days of training. Does anybody have any suggestions for a 30-40 mile loop from Highway 1 in Lewes???

Are Rt 23 and 24 rideable? How about Highway # 1???

Thanks.

1. Go south on 1 all the way to Ocean city. The only bad stretch is from rt 9 to Just south of Rehobeth. Once you get south of Dewey Beach there is a great shoulder all the way to the end of Ocean City. Be careful on 1 in from 9 to Dewey beach especially by the outlets.

2.) You can take rt 9 west to 18 (in Georgetown) & follow 18 as long as you want (It goes all the way to Easton MD (about 65 miles) if you want. Good shoulder, unfortunatly there is traffic but it's not too bad once you get out of Georgetown.

3.) If you look at a map, once you get on the otherside of Georgetown there are several loops that will take you around & back to 1.

4.) If you are looking for a Safe 40+ Miler, I would drive to Dewey Beach & take 1 south to Ocean City & loop back on 1. There really is a nice shoulder & it's an OK ride visually.

Good Luck

Len

P.S. I'll be down there on Memorial day W/E if you wnat to try to hook up let me know. I'm riding my bike from Easton on Friday Morning, so I'm available on either Sat or Sun A.M.

Love to hook up for a ride. I'm doing a mini family reunion and I'm staying in Lewes somewhere. I think its called the Red Mill Inn??? Anyhow I'm looking to get up pretty early and head out to get back before I get in too much trouble. If you'd be up for a 7:00 AM start or so let me know. I will probably have to leave my vehicle with my wife so I'll be bike bound from Lewes.

Let me know.

I lived in Lewes for two summer while interning there. There's great rural riding to be had on the western side of Route 1. Loops are limited on the east side.
There's no way that I would ride Route 1- especially that close to the tourist-y areas and on a holiday weekend. Route 9 is ok- fast traffic but big wide shoulders. 24 is a little scary around Rehoboth Beach. but gets better as you head west. Not sure about 23.
Your best bet (IMHO) coming from the Red Mill Inn is to very carefully ride south on Route 1 until you get to the intersection of Routes 1 and 9 (5 Points- there's a Lowe's and some other smaller stores). Turn right at the light and make the immediate left. Follow the "dogleg" to the right which puts you on Robinsonville Road. There's a ton of rural roads out that way- very wise to bring a Sussex County map! Not too much traffic and, for the most part, drivers in that area are respectful of cyclists.
The DE Dept of Transportation publishes decent bike maps for the state. Give them a call at 1-800-441-8846 and they'll hook you up with free maps for all 3 counties or http://www.deldot.net/static/info/bikemap.pdf will link you to a PDF of that same map (very large file!)
Hope this is helpful. If you have more questions, feel free to email rlkeyser@hotmail.com. Enjoy your weekend and ride safe!
