|I'm moving from riding country to DC in September and I was wondering if anyone can tell me about rides in and around DC for a cat 4 looking to stay in (get in) shape. I'll be living in Alexandria. On the weekends, I'll probably just pack up and go to Lexington, VA or Front Royal and ride there, but during the week, and some weekends, there's got to be something! How about clubs and teams?

|One of the fastest clubs around for racing types is DC VELO. They have several club rides, are represented well in most local races, and have ongoing training sessions. You can find out all about it at thier website here. http://www.dcvelo.com/index.htm
Plus it is very local to Alexandria. Also Potomac Pedalers is a group with many varied rides that are sometimes very fast. They rate the rides as to which class of rider on thier website.
Good luck, once you get here you'll find it not hard to locate the right group.

|Big team, some nice guys, in every crash. They can field 15 guys in a cat3/4 race and won't work together to get a win.|
|Several clubs around here. NCVC is one of the largest.||bill|

|They've got people all over the area. I know that they have rides leaving from Dean & deLuca in Georgetown that attract huge crowds. I think that, because of the numbers, you get everything from pretty serious guys to purely social folks (although the rides are fairly fast).
There also is Squadra Coppi, which probably is a little more intimate group but also visible. They have rides leaving Sunday a.m. from the Java Shack in Arlington.
There are other clubs. Depends on whether you want to join a pure racing team (Coppi, although they don't mind decent people sitting in) or more of a riding club, like the Team Lardbutts, who commute into D.C. every day and also have Sunday a.m. rides (early!) from Fort Hunt Park, Alex.

|Some of the other clubs mentioned are good, and Snow Valley is the dominant semi-pro/elite team, but if you want to race, Evolution Cycling is the best all around team in the area. I just moved out of DC after racing with them for a year. http://www.evolutioncycling.org . There A squad boast several Cat1 riders including a former olympian, a former Navigator, and several District and region title holders. The 4/5 group is coached by a former Cat1, and all of the riders work well together at races to get results. From what I've seen in the area, they do a better job of really working with less experienced riders as well. Anyway, good luck!|| |
