I am considering a ride to Lake Tahoe from Berkeley. Has anyone tried a similar ride? I would be very grateful for your suggestions on the best biker friendly routes.
I looked over the map and have roughly decided to take the 88 from Stockton and continue on it for about 160miles and then turn on to the 89.
Does anyone have any alternative idea?

|Its not a bad idea, but you would be riding 100+ miles on the flats of hwy 88 in the heat of the valley, through farmland (and farm dogs), with possibly unfriendly country types honking at you, etc. I once rode from Tracey to near Yosemite and felt like it was kind of a waste riding the country until you get out to the foothills. I would recommend maybe driving out to hwy 49 and planning a route out there - its much more scenic (and hilly!). Or you could cycle tour out north of tahoe on hwy 89 above truckee.|

|I've never ridden all of this ride but I do have a cabin at Lake Tahoe so I'm familur with the area.
The stretch of 89 between Truckee and Tahoe City is awesome and a must do. There is even a bikepath most of the way.
I agree that highway 49 is a great ride especially above Nevada City. It passes some great hilly terriagn through some forests. Between Auburn and Nevada City though the road is a deathtrap though. Also, I'm not sure hoe to link 49 to 89. If memory serves you need to ride on I80 for a long while. Probably not very much fun.
