Anyone else ride Bike New York yesterday? Speaking for myself, I wasn't terribly impressed after hearing so many good things prior to the ride. I'm curious about what others thought...

I too was extrememly dissatisfied with the ride. I have been on the ride 5 times and only left feeling cheated out of my money this time. I walked my bike the fisrt 5 miles of the ride and then had to stop multiple times to jockey through a poorly thought out bathroom stop that was in the riding lanes! Having only been back 4 blocks from the start at the beginning and riding (when it was possible) at 15 mph, part of the route was cut out because of the slow pace of the whole ride......did anyone else feel this way? Was I expecting too much?

I realize that I am about 3 weeks too late, but I have just stopped ranting about how much I hated the 5 boro ride I did in 2000. There are just too many riders resulting in too many collisions. Additionally, the event seems to attract those that tend to ride their bikes as if they were NYC cab drivers. The organizers need to limit the number of riders! I adamantly discourage anyone from taking part in the 5 boro ride.

In contrast, the Transportation Alternatives ride (usually in September I think) is a great ride through NYC. The turnout is about 2000, which is not big enough to close down entire streets, but enough to put drivers on notice that bikers are about. Further, the rest stops are terrific. They offer a bounty of food and drink as well as accessible bike maintenance. Lastly, the riders are people who actually care about and are used to biking in NYC.
