|Where can I purchase "nutted" brakes for a 27" wheel frame?||ss-nyc|

|I normally post in the "fixed" discussion but thought I might have better luck here with these questions. I have an older frame built for 27" wheels that I want to build up but do not have brakes for it. It uses the older style "nutted" calipers (not the newer recessed mount).
- Does anyone still make these that I could purchase but not spend a fortune on them? (I want to avoid used on ebay since everything is overpriced)
- Is it possible to alter the frame and fork to use newer "recessed" mount brakes? (I could get the new long reach models from Shimano)
- Is it possible to find a very long reach brake so that I can use 700c wheels?

|I was in the same predicament a while back...I learned a ton from reading the info on Sheldon Brown's Harris Cyclery website. The best page to look at first is:
If you click on the links about recessed mount, he gives some solutions that work (I swapped front for rear like he suggests and fitted modern dual pivots to a late'70s/early'80s Raleigh frame with no problems at all).
If you are looking for REALLY LONG caliper side pulls, the Tektro 984s they sell there are pretty reasonable...this would probably allow 700c to work on a frame made for 27".
If you are on a REALLY tight budget (like I was for another project), I was able to get very functional new nutted long-reach brakes complete with hoods for under $20 shipped from
search for "brakeset pyramid sidepull alloy" for the brakes (they sell front and rear separately...) and "brake hood 144" for the rubber hoods. Nothing fancy, but they work!

|All you need to do is enlarge the hole on one side just wide enough to accept the recessed nut. I once did this to a fork on a roadside-discount bike, with a hand drill and a metal bit, while the fork was still attached. If you want it to look good, I'd suggest removing the fork first, and mounting it in a clamp.|| |
