Questions on an old Pinarellodzrider
Apr 7, 2003 10:17 AM
A friend got a black and pink Pinarello at Salvation Army. It's old enough to have a Simplex FDer with a cage that moves on a shaft, and Mafac center pull brakes. He says there's no decal identifying the frame material other than one that says Made in Germany. I may buy it from him to make my son a fixed gear bike. Is it worth fooling with beyond the curiosity factor of having a Pinarello that's made in Germany?
sounds, ugh...wrongdesmo

I doubt it's a "German Pinarello". With a shaft type front der and center pulls it sounds like a low end "boom" bike from the 70's. Kind of early for the pink paint job. Maybe resprayed in the 80's and some Pinarello decals thrown on for fun. The made in Germany decal, well ??? The good Pinarellos from the 70's and 80's I've seen all have had logos etched in the seat stay caps and fork crown. Plus some nice lug cut-outs. Still might make a nice fixie judged soley on the frame quality. Check for forged drop-outs, etc.
