This may be a stupid inquiry (sorry). I've been browsing vintage frames on eBay, for possible buildups or fixed-gear conversion. One nice-looking Ochsner has some large horizontal slots in the bottom of the BB shell (pictured, lower right). Seems like this could allow quite a bit of dirt and water to get in. Could that be a problem? [Disclaimer: I might bid on the frame, but have no connection whatsoever with the seller.]

actually allows quite a bit of water to get out. and saves weight to boot. quite common on high end steel frames from the 70's and 80's. good loose ball BB's have a plastic sleeve that seals the bearings, and most modern BB's are fully sealed so not to worry. pic is of my '73 Ital Vega.
