|Amazing site. I never realized there were so many different slotted cleats - maybe just as confusing as clipless? |
Old ideas die hard. I just got back on a road bike after a 25 year hiatus. I forgot how much I LOVE it.
My last road shoes were balerina looking with nailed on cleats (I'm only 47 yrs., not that old) - you could still use the clipped pedals with regular shoes too.
It seems like most (NOT ALL) hard headed knuckle dragger toe clip users that changed to clipless admit that clipless is a better system. Just my observation - don't flame me.
So................At this stage in my reborn bicycle infancy (one always needs more and better) I have decided to buy "all purpose" shoes like the Shimano MO37 or Specialized rockhopper (not too many fit my wide feet) that I can walk in, and use "campus" style pedals (SPD/platform) so I can meet my needs for now. If I get the dreaded hotspots or don't have my bicycle specific shoes, I can ride the platform sides. After a year or two, when I get a really good bike, I can decide if I want to walk like a penquin in order to have the most efficient (energy wise) set up. By then, there will probably be ten other new systems out.
Thanks all for your advice to my inquiry below. It's nice not to be young and be controlled by the Lance Armstrong wanna be bicycle marketers.
