It has got to be doing some good riding SS/fixieLone Gunman

Was out on a 2 day vacation trip this past week, invite by some relatives to a camp ground area where they go annually. My BIL mentioned bike riding was good as the roads were relatively flat near Lake Erie so I brought the SS. BIL introduced me to someone who was a rider who had reportedly did a 70 miler the previous day, so we planned to do a 40-50 miler the next day. I asked about what kind of speed the guy was planning and he said 21-22mph and I warned him that I had the SS with me and that it might be too fast for that and he agreed. I said we would see how it goes, he said there was another rider coming also.

I saw where the guy was staying and wanted to get an idea of what he was riding and all I saw was a Raleigh comfort bike at his shack. I was thinking the guy was sand bagging me and would show up with a C40 in the AM full kit and smoke my sorry arse on my SS. Not quite. He had a Raleigh with Campy and his buddy had a Trek OCLV and they looked at me like no way he can hang with no gears. Well I hung. We did 40 miles, his OCLV bud took off with about 10 miles to go to "hammer some miles" and we slowed our pace some also. I never even thought to check the speedo when we got back from the ride yesterday and checked it today, an ave. of 18.1mph. I don't put alot of stock into ave. #'s, but that was faster than I have done on a geared bike this season. I live in a hilly area which is a reason I don't put alot of stock in ave #'s, but I was tired after that ride and now I know why. I now need to get on a geared bike and see what has happened to speed/conditioning. It must have improved, I have been riding the SS almost exclusively for 3 weeks now and each ride I blow through hills that had me really gearing down before.

... you're too late. I saw on of those in an 8-speed in the World Singlespeed Championships in ... uh, 1999 I think. That's a little pirate run in the hills east of LA. Travis Brown showed up and made everyone else look bad.
Oh, that is really coool...Can I get a 42-42 front, too? nmrwbadley
