a bar and stem and I might have to shim a 25.4 bar to a 26.0 stem. Any opinions?

I had to shim a crank for about 3 years. Worked fine in that app. A Bud can is my material of choice.

Or a Cannondale frame. Whichever is handier.

Heh heh. Couldn't help myself.

the Atala i just built up had a 26.8 seat tube diameter and in the past i have been able to use a 26.6 post in this size with no probs. the new seatpost just kept sliding and all else was right so i needed to shim.

had never done it before and it worked perfectly. i only needed to wrap it around half the post and greased everything well. it was very easy to cut to size with scissors. its invisible and after taking the post out after a ride to see how it all bedded i was impressed that it hadnt scored the seatpost on the side that was shimmed which is rare on a frame that has seen some use over the years.

where before i was hesitant i am now a convert to "shimming is OK". i would imagine something like a 25.4 to a 26.0 perhaps needing something specifically bought for the purpose but where the diff is slight a soda can is not a bad option and more preferable to overtightening or clamping.

I've made my own when I've needed to, but if you want to go the Serious route, Rivendell sells a Nitto shim for $6, I think. But the shipping will cost you another $7, so you might as well throw in a bunch of stuff.

I don't know if it is sarcasm or what but how hard can it be to shim a bar?
