|Proposed 9.11 memorial ride NYC to DC||Lone Gunman|

|I propsed a group of fixie riders from the group do this ride. It started out as a noble and righteous cause to ride for. I recently learned the details and I am going to pass on the ride due to what I perceive as a "logistics nightmare."
Originally, the ride was supposed to have 3000 slots open. It has been reduced to 1000. The cost for the 3 day event including meals and tent lodging is $300 and begins on a Friday AM out of NYC. Unfortunately this $300 does not cover return trip to NYC where my vehicle would have been left. I simply am not prepared to spend that much money on a bike ride which I predict would come close to $800 to $1000. Lodging, parking, ground transportation, sorry it is over my budget and I don't feel good about soliciting funds from the general public for me to go joy ride for a weekend, even if it is a memorial ride.
|I agree. There has to be some other ride this fall..... nm||Dave Hickey|

|Cycle North Carolina. I did this ride the last 2 years and am getting the itch to go again for some reason. $175 is the ride fee, $50 for return bus trip, probably about $140 for 20+ meals. It is a week long tour of about 450+ miles, 900+ riders. Solid logistics, good showers at the end of each day, great weather. Food was a little sketchy the first 2 days but I am sure they got that worked out this time. Fourth year for this ride, REI does the mech support, good routes so far, fun time.|
|is there a website or phone number? sounds interesting nm||Djudd|

|I think. If not, do a yahoo search and type in cycle north carolina and you will hit the site. The ride is from Statesville to New Bern this year, starts saturday 10/5, and ends in New Bern saturday 10/12. Covers Lexington- Ashboro-(loop day)-Sanford-Dunn-Kinston-New Bern. Site has a message board. Accommodations are by camping or if you choose hotel, all bags are transported to next site, shower trucks with good hot water flow rate are provided if you camp, they have single day registration available for $35 a day if you want to do a partial tour.
Year one I met 2 guys to ride with who were of equal riding ability. We hung for the week and it was a good time. One of the guys reminded you of Jerry Lewis, (HEY LADY!!). He is from Virginia and he made it to the ride year 2 and brought a rider with him but warned me in advance that he talked the guy into the ride and he was a large rider so he felt obligated to stay with him for the week, I was okay with that, I would see him in camp that night and save a spot nearby. The guy "Jerry" brought, he didn't know him that well. He was a heavy guy, early 50s, with a strong southern accent, talked and acted like Foghorn Leghorn. And the first night there after it got a little dark he pulls out a joint and fires it up "for medicinal purposes" as he says in his heavy drawl. Well this persistant pattern continued for the week, I moved away from the "drug activity", Foghorn Leghorn found fellow dope smokers to hang with so he had his own party goin' on for the week. Poor "Jerry", a family man to the core, had no idea about this "habit" and apoligized over and over for this guy, it was funny.
There are a few "colorful" characters on the ride the last 2 years, a fun tour, no rain last 2 years, but we had frost, snow and a little heat.
