Zefal HP frame pump(5 posts)

This pump came with the Schwinn Chromie. It appears to be completely functional. The pump is advertised in the Nashbar catalog as a reversible head pump. I received it set up as a Schrader type valve. I want presta, if I intend to use the pump that is what I have for tubes. The head screws off and there is a rubber fitting part that will secure sort of loosely to the stem of a presta and behind it is a plastic gizmo with a stem that opens a schrader valve core that lets air in as you pump. Behind that is a spring. Anyone know how this is supposed to work? I tried removing the plastic stem gizmo using only the rubber fitting and it did pump air. Am I missing a key part to convert to presta? Does the barrel require lubrication, this pump has been out of action for a long time, feels like it has oil in the barrel? Lastly, where is the logical place to mount, my options will be top or down tube?

Been years since I messed with my pump head, but try turning the rubber gasket around.

My Zefal is 10 or 15 years old, and I've never lubed it, so I'd just try it as is. If it works, don't worry about it.

As for the location, under the top tube leaves room for bottle cages on the seat and down tubes. Make sure the flange on the handle of the pump doesn't rub against your frame (wrap with cloth tape or slip a section of tube over if it does).

The Zefal used a different gasket for Presta valves. good luck trying to find one now.
Is it an HP, or an hpX?cory

Haven't fooled with mine in years, but I have two old hpX pumps, and they're convertible from presta to schrader with the parts that are in the pump. Don't have one where I can get at it now, but as I remember there's a softish rubberish gasketish thing under the screwoff head, and you flip that over (and maybe the hardish plasticish thing behind it as well), then put the whole thing back together.

On my HPX: The plastic piece goes in the pump with the little tip going in first. The shoulder of the plastic piece fits into the larger hole (schrader side). The smaller presta hole will now be facing out. Put the cap on and go.
