|I was looking at purchsing my first road bike and use to ride with a guy who had a mercian. I liked the ride and was wondering if anyone could express some opinion. I'm looking at older english bikes.|

|Did a century a few months ago with a friend who bought a Mercian when he worked in a bike shop in Colorado. It must be...20 years old?...now, still cherry and original and beautifully cared for. He's a perfectionist mechanic and maintenance geek, has ridden several "modern" frames, and says he'll never give up the Merc. I was actually pretty flattered when he said my Atlantis was "a lot like my Mercian."
Warning: Be prepared for people to look at the MERCIAN decals and say, "Whurr kin I git one uh them 'MERICAN bi-sackuls?"

|i am a mercian and my first 'proper' bike
was a mercian (green with red panels).
it was light and we had fun together.
back then mercians were run of the mill
and probably equivilant to a decent raleigh
the bikes considered bespoke would be hetchins
etc or now maybe a roberts

|I have a 20 year old King of Mercia touring frame that I used last year in Wales; rode very nicely. Mercian was very popular with my club in the mid-1980s and I think everyone thought very highly of them. Can't tell if you are buying new or used but Mercian will do anything you want in terms of custom. Pretty nice with beautiful paint work.
And noting another poster's comments, I have a new Bob Jackson frame (haven't built it up yet)in green with red headtube and seattube panels done in the Hetchin's style. Very pretty.

|I have a King of Mercia that I ordered in early January, received in early March, and have ridden since. The finish is beautiful. My only complaint is that it's such an incredibly nice, smooth, well-mannered yet responsive ride that nothing else compares, so I will likely either never get another bike or will order more Mercians. And at the current exchange rate, they're a dead steal.
