|I was at the LBS today picking up some brake pads. I asked about old frames he might get on trades. Told him I was interested in doing a fixie project but I wanted it to be a unique frame, possibly something that is all chrome. As it turns out he has, for sale, a Schwinn Voyeur 11.8, full bike. Components are junk, I need the frame. The frame and fork is all chrome, the decals are peeling a little, they are the old style Schwinn decals, it is my size (57c-t-c tt) and is lugged. The chrome appears to be in fair to good condition. It has the the horizontal dropouts. $65.
Anyone know about this model of frame? It needs a good bit of TLC as it has some rust in the BB area but looks workable. I envision a work of art in my midst, blinding shimmering chrome in the sun as I blaze down the street on my SS/fixie. Am I nuts?

|I've never seen an all-chrome Schwinn other than Paramounts. Schwinn chrome is, however, legendary for its thickness and durability.
I don't see how you can possibly go wrong. Its cheap. It has horizontal dropouts. Its a fixie/singlespeed waiting to happen.
Just for fun, get the serial number and we'll see if we can figure out the age. keithsbikes.com used to have the SN/age chart.

|Voyageur was solid quality frame made for Schwinn in Japan as the LeTours were. I remember as a kid hanging out in a Schwinn shop lusting after a full chrome Super LeTour. I think it sold for around $400 in 1978 or so.
Your potential bike is not in the same league as a Paramount but is pretty good. It probably weighs 25#s complete in its original gear so will strip down to a real nice fixie.
There's a couple of Schwinn experts who hang out at OldRoads.com Vintage Lightweight board who probably have the original catalog info on the bike. Check them out.

|I get the frame and do a solid cleanup on it, part it out and sell it if I come up short on the fixie conversion. I truly envision having my riding buds drool over this one as it would be an unannounced debut one day upon completion. I can't recall ever showing up for a ride and seeing a full chrome bike. The frame actually looked nicer than my Viscount, rust aside. It does have some and I am wondering how well I can clean that up to make it a treasure. I think I could make a buck on it as it is a 57, popular size.|

|... there is a very good chance the rust is mostly superficial, and will clean up with a little fine steel wool. That's always been my experience with Schwinn chrome.
If there is pitting, where better to hide it than the BB? Clean the pits to bare metal and fill 'em with a little JB Weld. It will look like a speck of grease.
If, by some miracle, the rust has actually compromised the structural integrity of the bike (pretty rare on a Schwinn), you still can't go wrong for $65 of stunning wall art.

|Fairly sure it has not compromised the frame, otherwise the LBS would most likely scrap heaped it as an unsafe bike. Still mulling it over, but got the vision thing going of the flash fixie...|| |
