$189 justified for an old Tommasini?SelfPropelled

I grabbed an old Tommisini built with Shimano 600 and Mavic clinchers on ebay for $189 and wonder if I screwed up. Somehow I missed the oxidation (rust) on the spokes and am really second quessing my future commuter. I fiqured the 600 groupo would validify the price with the wheel set because they are supposedly under 1000 miles. The frame is Columbus mystery material and its probably gonna be Cromar from what ive heard. Anyone know what i can do for the rusty spoke symptoms? I have never rebuild a wheel, but this may be my chance to try to.

I had a similar wheelset with rust forming on the spokes. I took a piece of steel wool to the rust and it came right off. Even if the wheelset is toast, you could probably have a rebuild done with new rims for around $100 and that would be a decent wheelset.

If it makes you feel any better, I have about $275 in parts and labor in a restoration project that has mostly 600 parts on a bike that I bought for around $200 in 1978. I had $146 or so in the wheels alone (tires inc). And most of the parts used were original, except bar, seatpost, brakelevers, chain, cassette.

I have two options to go about for a daily means of transportation (and FUN!) will be to go ahead and get a older wheelset with DA 7 speed (changable to 8 or 9 sp right?)with campy omega strata hardox (anyone know about them?) or just buy some modern stainless steel spokes with alloy nipples and build it on the old rims which are pretty good being mavic opens. Whats the diff between double butted spokes and regulars? This is a truly valuable discussion forum. ~ryan

I can't answer the DA questions, the General Board might be a better place to ask but I can handle the spoke questions.

Butted spokes have a variable diameter or guage. A typical plain spoke is a straight 14 guage. A butted spoke typically might be 15 guage except for the inch or so right above the hub and what screws into the nipple. Remember with guages bigger #s = smaller diameter. The upshot is that you get a weight benefit, not much but multiplied by 64 or 72 spokes it is measurable, by using butted spokes. However, the wheel is not as strong as straight spokes and if you're bodyweight is a little, or a lot, high you'd probably do better with straight spokes.
