I just got back from criterium tonight. Well I went to the 31 Carolina Cup that someone advertise on the racing forum. I got to the sight with some time to put my road bike together. Little did I know that this would be the start of a disater for me. I started putting my bike together, and find out that my chain was off the crank. Well you know I started trying to find some fellow racer who was racing later on to help me. But no one would help me. So I had to look for the race site mechanic to help me get this disater fixed. Well to my luck I get it fixed right before they start the Cat 5 crit. What luck. The next disaster that happen was that registration was closing for Cat 5. So I manage to be pre-registered for the race so I only had to pick up my number. Then my luck started to change at this moment. I manage to change clothes, and get my road bike fixed by the race site mecahanic. After that I get to starting line of the Cat 5 crit with my bike. While my crit. number was being pinned on my jersey at the starting line of the Cat5 crit. So I manage to start off with the Cat5 field and get a good position. To my surprise I manage to hang with the main pack for most of the 1st lap. And then I stay within close distance of the main pack for the next 4 laps. The Crit was only 5 laps of a 1.6 mile course that totaled to 8 miles for 5 laps. I also manage not to get lapped liked I did last year, and I finish the crit too. The major surprise for me was that I able to stay behind the main pack and finish with the chase group. I also manage to beat 19 of the 47 Cat 5 racers at the crit today . I finish in 28th out of 47 Cat 5 racers. This not to mention all the disaster I had before the start of the Cat 5 crit. I know now that I am getting closer to finishing in the top 10 by the middle of next year, and possible upgrade to Cat 4 next year. Yeah!!!

P.S.

I've had my share of mechanicals before a race. I avoided that by removing no more than my wheels for transport. I also overhaul my bike 2 rides before the race. 2 rides will usually shake anything loose. My bike isn't as pretty on the starting line, but I actually feel more confident knowing I had plenty of time to "shake down" the rig.
