|Cat 4 races, or so I've heard. For one, there aren't that many riders in the field, so that there is no place to wheelsuck and hide, which is really all you should be doing in your first race unless you are a full-fledged genetic mutant and can cream the field on raw power. For another, some of those kids are fast. In the last Cat 5 race I did, the kid who got third in the Jr race won our race. A couple of them are full-fledged Cat 2's, for heavens sake, and several are Cat 3's or could be.
So, you may want to try Cat 5.
Nutrition tips? Eat and drink. For the typical Cat 5 race, you can manage the entire race with what's in your belly if you put enough in there before hand. Everyone has to find their own pre-race meal. I usually have peanut butter and jelly and a banana. Lots of water. Eat at least two hours before, and slam a gu before the start.
