Race Report: Spring Prairie Road Race, Spring Prairie, WI, 6/21/03, 6 laps of "Rural 6.5 mile loop with 4 corners & challenging climbs."

June 21, 2003 - Spring Prairie Road Race, Spring Prairie, WI

The course is a 6.5 mile near rectangle of near perfect pavement. It has about 460 ft of climbing per lap with one big "challenging climb" just before the start/finish that is 0.2 miles long with an average of 10% and a section near the top of about 14%. Now I realize that if you live, say west of Denver, this might be your driveway, but to an old, fat guy from Illinois with a 12-21 cassette, this was.

THE HILL FROM HELL: This is a very short report. Ten aged riders started the 50+ race and headed out for 6 laps. The same ten were together near the end of the first lap at the bottom of the HILL. Only 9 were together at the top. I spun for the first third, slid back in the saddle and pushed for the second third and had to stand for the final third. If I stand, I'm cooked. Someone also attacked going over the top so there was no getting back on for me. From there on, I had a nice ride in the country and got some good hill work. End of report. Lesson #1 – I'm too fat. Lesson #2 – What's a guy like me think he's doing with a 39-21 low gear in a hilly Wisconsin road race? Why do I keep learning (not) the same lessons?

Because you're just like the rest of us old guys: you shed brain cells and gain fat with each birthday!!:)-

I agree! That was some hill. I think that was about the longest steep hill that Ive seen this year in a race. I was doing 4/5 race. Too bad that hill was right before the start/finish line. Goin up to the finish, I thought I would use a harder gear than previous 5 laps figuring to power up the hill. WRONG! I was in the front middle of the pack before that hill and ended up back of the what was left of the stretched out pack by the time I got to the line. Believe it or not, I thought the race was easy except that hill.
I saw the 3 and 4/5 races end...TFerguson

I new we were going to suffer. Not even the winners were smiling.

I was looking out for your LS so I could scold you just in case you made the wrong decision and showed up. I also carefully watched my pre-race water intake so as not to suffer the same.

Yeah, I had a nice pleasant ride. I'm trying to decide if I should do the Badger State Games RR. Looks tough. But registration deadline is Wednesday so I dunno... You doing Badger Games? I think last year they ran the 50s with the 4/5s...

This weekend is an MTB in Naperville and the following is the 4 Bridges of Elgin. Elgin is one of my 3 priority A races.
