Heavy rain, lightning, road race canceled. What do youbill

think? 45 mi (60 mi 1/2/3) road race, included an unpaved 1 mi section. Country roads, narrow, twisty. I think that a rolling enclosure had been planned. As the rain looked as if it wasn't going to let up, they at first diverted from the unpaved section, and then canceled.
I was kind of happy about it, myself, but I drove 45 min's, not hours as did some folks. After the cancellation, we did one lap of the course, and it was hairy in spots -- standing water, etc. I would have done it, but it would have been tough. Some people were really ticked.

I think just about any outdoor event gets canceled when lightning is present. Safety first.

you're talking about Poolesville? I saw it was cancelled, didn't realize it was a day-of cancellation. I'd been pissed if I had driven 2 hours to do it this year and then it was called off. How was the dirt road, I remember it as pretty hard packed/gravel, wouldn't think rain would make it that bad? Did they cancel b/c of lightning, which is understandable, or just alot of rain?
Depends on who you talk to. I think that it was mostly becausebill

of the lightning, but there was talk of possibly serious weather on and off throughout the day. As it happened, by about 11 the weather was pretty tame. I think that the standing water here and there was a problem worth worrying about, too.
I thought that the dirt section was hairy. Soft crown in the middle, slick tracks on either side. And bumpy as hell. With the glasses fogging badly.

The promoter did not have a choice here. It is up to the race official to make the call. I rode the course anyway and found that the right call was made. I had very little stopping power and there could have been damage to racers and bikes had the races gone off. I know the hosting club will do everything they can to let us race this course, dirt and all. IMHO, better to race this on a better day and take away any excuses for not finising.
