I won, I actually f*ing DID IT!!!Cat 4 boy

This year, approaching 40, my kids threw down the gauntlet and challenged me to win something......well at last I made it!

Having ridden the first 2 races held in the UK in February & finishing comfortably, I then did a 2 week training camp in Majorca with my old mates from the Mid Devon CC, organised by Colin Lewis, (TdF rider in 1967). I suffered like a dog but did 700 miles approx.

Finally I think I'm seeing the benefit of all that suffering, I rode a crit last weekend for 4th cat riders and found myself one of the 5 riders left at the front with 5 laps left! The guy I'd identified as the main threat set off real hard into the head wind so I jumped after him, looking round with 2 laps left we were on our own. Going into the last lap I expected him to swing over & start finessing for the sprint, but no, he plugged away on the front. As he wound it up in the final 200 metres I "calmly" snicked it into the 13 sprocket and drew level with 30 metres left, no way was he going to beat me, sure enough I got him by a length. There is nothing that beats the thrill of crossing that line first I can tell you!!!
So now I'm Cat 3 boy not cat 4. Never give up guys, if I can do it, then so can you, keep training, keep racing & keep believing.
congrats; sounds like you outsmarted him, too nmDougSloan

Cat 4 Man,

I'm 37, happily married, with children, happily employed. I dabbled in the Cat V and duathlon scene for the first time last year. In the 2 Cat V's, came in 12th the first race (2nd best in the peleton) and got dropped on the 3rd of 5 laps on a course with 800 climbing feet/lap (7 miles)

This year, with a massively snowy winter in DC, some illness, I lost my base via commuting, and have been suffering like a mortal. And I've been thinking, what the f**k are you doing, some sorry imitation of Pan? Look at what you've got, no need to suffer like this?!

But you know, I've never come in first in a race - 2nd yeah in cross country in high school - and I'm in much need of motivation.

sounds like the dude wanted u to win. leading out the sprint like that is a tactical error on his part..although a win is still kool no matter what the circumstances :O)

Thanks to all who took the trouble to reply, I'm still on cloud nine, and still getting dropped by the first cats in the chain gang ;)

I'm race doctor on a 2 day stage race in SW England this w/e, then racing on monday in another circuit race. Looking for more points & wins.

I'm flattered you noticed my humble triumph Doug!

As for the dude leading out the sprint, well I did "apologise" for coming by him at the end, but it was his choice to stay out in the wind. Maybe my wife will "let" me buy that De Rosa now...or should it be a Giant TCR carbon??? Help me out guys
