Who here trains with a power meter?upandcomer

I ask because I just did my first outdoor road ride on Sunday with my Power-tap (I live in Edmonton and its still pretty crappy on the roads). It sure opened my eyes as to how varied my power output was. Even the slightest hill raised my output significantly. Something I didn't notice on the trainer.

Indoors always gives you a smoother ride power-wise. The exception would be a Computrainer with some "hills" thrown in. But outdoors you really get the power going everywhere. No hills where I live but consistent winds, and this time of year plenty of gusts. Did a 2x20 minute interval workout a few weeks ago where by power (based on Powertap data) was fluctuating +/- 30 watts due to the random gusts. Can be difficult to maintain your power zone. The humbling thing that day was pushing at around 300 W and only going 14 or 15 mph.
