This is for those of you that have to travel on business and maintain a strict training schedule. What do you do during your overnight stays? I have to spend a couple of nights out of town every other week. I try to make one of those days a rest day but that still leaves me with two workouts I need to do. In places I have access to a stationary bike I try my best to make it work by doing about an hour of interval work. How about when there is no stationary bike? Is it beneficial to run for an hour or is it just too different from cycling? What do you travelling folks do to maintain your training regimen?

I go for walks, ranging from 40 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how much time I have. I've yet to end up in a spot where I couldn't walk, even if it just means back and forth on the frontage road. I try to walk a 5 mph pace, which is like a recovery ride. I burn some calories and get some aerobic exercise. I don't run because my body can't take/doesn't like the pounding. I find walking to be better than the ill fitting, poorly functioning, uncomfortable exercise bikes in hotels (always located in a too-hot room next to the humid pool!).

I run about 3 hours a week in the fall, winter as cross training, in addition to 3-9 hours of riding. I maintain running a few times a month on off days throughtout the spring and summer, just so that I when The Old Lady and I go for vacation, I can get a few runs in without fear of injury.

Two runs, a day on rental bikes, and all the walking/hiking we do...I don't feel like I miss out on anything.

Hi Kinger,

Some options I've used include:

1. resting. I don't like to do it, I feel like I'd get out of shape, but I have always come back stronger. 3 days of rest has helped me.

2. swimming

3. weights/strength, from simple isometrics and even bodyweight exercises to using a hotel gym

4. stairs--the stairways in hotels can be pretty good for some looooong climbs. Do one step at a time or two at a time, or mix it up...fast, slow, whatever.

You can get travel size strength stuff (like bands, and weights that you fill with water)--I would think about having one day a rest, another a recovery (easy activity) or total rest day, and the other a strength day, or something like that.

Rest works especially well if you do a really hard workout just before you go. In fact, any time I know I'll be out of commission (like Christmas day, for example), I'll run myself into the ground before hand and use the time for recovery.

Stretching is good.

I second that.

Choose your weapon that leaves the greatest post exercise fatigue after 12 hours. Could be intervals or a long hard ride. Do that before you go away and use your 2 days to recover.

Of course, it has to fit in with where you are at in your programme.
